It has not been possible to go underground at Chatterley Whitfield for many years because the passages are flooded.
In 2018 Stoke-on-Trent City Council, as landowner, imposed severe restrictions on visiting Chatterley Whitfield because of concerns over safety. Some buildings are in a dangerous condition and almost all the ON SITE buildings are closed for the foreseeable future.
Currently, the only way for members of the public to visit the site is on the annual Heritage Open Day which is usually in September. At present on open day there is access to the Deployment Centre, and a small winding House. All the other buildings can be viewed on the designated SAFE ROUTE.
NEW OPENING HOURS
You can now visit our new Heritage Centre, Remembrance Garden and from August 2023 the reopened Ken Salt building which houses a number of large mining artefacts.
We are open from around 09.30 hrs to 13.00 hrs every Thursday and Saturday morning.
Some of the land around the perimeter of Chatterley Whitfield, however, is open to the public, and you can get an excellent view of the site from the top of the nearby tip.
Additional visits can be arranged, subject to the approval of Stoke on Trent City Council and such requests can be made to the visit the site, via the 'Friends' Secretary. (e.g. Students requesting access for photography - Project etc, Film Companies, Universities and Colleges, Relatives researching Family History etc).
The council will issue a PERMIT TO ACCESS if they give approval for a site visit.
